Gas, electric and heat pumps
Winter here is short and then it is not. A few nights a year drop far enough that a furnace which has been coasting since March finally gives up, and those are the nights everyone calls at once. We repair, service, install and replace all three types of system, so whichever one is in your building, it is the same phone number.
If you have a heat pump, the box outside that heats you in January is the same box that cools you in August. That is worth knowing, because one annual service covers both jobs. It is the same visit described on our maintenance page, and the same equipment covered under air conditioning.
On an older furnace we will tell you honestly when another repair stops being worth it. Heat exchangers crack, and there is a point where putting money into a system is worse value than replacing it. We would rather have that conversation in October than in an emergency in January.
Signs it needs attention
Most of these are cheap in October and expensive in January.
- Rooms that never warm up
- Cold spots and uneven heat usually mean airflow, ductwork or a failing blower rather than a system that is too small.
- Banging, grinding or rattling
- Noise that is new is a loose component or a motor on the way out. It rarely fixes itself and it is cheaper before it seizes.
- A bill that jumped without a cold snap
- A system losing efficiency runs longer to reach the same temperature. The bill is often the first thing to tell you.
- Repairs more than once a season
- Two or three calls in one winter is the point where the repairs start adding up to a meaningful share of a new system.
- Ten to fifteen years old
- Past that age most systems are noticeably less efficient than what is available now, and parts get harder to source.
- Any smell you cannot place
- Dust burning off at the start of the season is normal. Anything else is worth a look, and some of it is urgent.
If you smell gas, do not wait for us
Leave the building first, then call your gas utility from outside. Do not flip switches on your way out. Once the gas company has made it safe, call us and we will deal with the furnace.
A sharp burning smell, soot around the unit, or a pilot flame burning yellow instead of blue are all reasons to shut the system off and get it looked at the same day.
Gas furnaces
Still the most common thing we work on around Sulphur Springs, and the one where annual service matters most, because a gas furnace has a combustion side that an electric system does not.
Ignitors, flame sensors, pressure switches and blower motors account for most of the calls. Most are same-day fixes.
Heat pumps
One system for both seasons, and efficient in a climate like ours where winter rarely stays severe for long. When it does get very cold, the backup heat strips carry the load.
If yours is running constantly in cold weather, or the backup heat is doing more work than it should, that is worth diagnosing before the bill arrives.
No heat? Call the shop.
Someone will pick up. If you are outside Sulphur Springs, check the service area first.
